Different Types of Highland Swords
Since the movie Highlander came out there has been a misconception (albeit among a small group of people) that the claymore was the only sword to have come from or been used in the Highlands. Even the William Wallace sword from Braveheart was a claymore if memory serves me correctly. The truth is, Highland swords could be a number different types of weapons. Certainly, claymores were a popular type, but so were long swords and, in later years, the basket hilt broadsword. Like most countries, different swords were popular at different times in history. Whichever sword was the most useful or the most ‘in fashion’ at the time was generally the most widely used. Regardless of what type of sword was most used, they all make nice additions to any collectors’ armory. Although, I suppose I might be considered a bit bias because I just happen to be a sword collector that likes the historical replicas!
